LCD Display

LCD display size does make a significant difference. A 2 inch LCD is fine, however a 3 inch is better because a bigger display lets you see your photos more clearly and whether the photos you just taken are good enough to keep or not.

Does the LCD display clearly in various lighting conditions such as in sunlight, outdoors, indoors, and at night. The ability to see your photos as you take them is digital camera's main benefit and purposes.

Settings

Most digital cameras will have various shooting modes and some have additional manual settings. Most ultra-compact consumer cameras usually do not have manual overrides which limits you to your cameras provided shooting modes. This is perfectly alright if you only want a 'point and shoot' type digital camera.

If having the ability to change shutter speed, aperture or other more advanced features is important to you, then buy a digital camera that also has manual settings. Using your camera in specific environments, sporting events for example, will require your selected camera to have these features.

Memory Cards

Memory cards come in several varieties so check your camera for the type of card it uses. Do you intend using a 'card reader' as a way of expanding your set up? Check both the camera's internal and external memory size and make this part of your buying decision.

Higher capacity memory cards with give you greater storage capacity. If you see yourself taking extended vacations or taking a high number of photos then a higher capacity card would best suit your intended purpose. Extra back-up memory is also a good idea.

USB Connection

Today's good Digital Cameras are USB compatible. USB provides a convenient way to connect your camera to your laptop or computer to transfer and edit photos. Software loaded DVDs are often provided with the camera for this purpose.

Movie Clips Feature

This modern digital cameras feature although not essential is nice to have. It allows you to take short movie clips with your your camera. Check your cameras specifications if this is a particularly important feature to you.

Size and Weight

Size does matter.
Eye-catching, small elegant physical aesthetics are not a guarantee of improved performance.
Big, may not necessarily be better either as you may find smaller, lighter models easier to handle than more bulkier models.

After Purchase

Read the quick start guide and manual. Playing and practicing with camera's various features is really the fun part. This is where you get to learn and find out what everything does. If you're not tech savvy take your time, be patient and start with the basics. It is only a matter of time and practice before you'll be amazing yourself, family and friend with some amazing photos.

Lens Can be Costly

Lens can be expensive. Several types of lens are available and some are highly specialized. Zoom, telephoto and wide angle lens are the more commonly known ones but there are other high end specialist lens costing in the tens of thousands of dollar.

Again, if you're just starting out it's best to stick with the basics. For most photographers, the lens your camera came with with do fine for now.

 Pixels And MegaPixels

As a rule of thumb, when all else is equal, more pixels are better. Now a days, for about $500 you can buy a basic type 10 Megapixels digital camera. With 10 Megapixels the print quality is quite high.
With more professional models you get more megapixels which, of course, can cost a lot more.
